Autism

Nancy Alar and Matt Ward

People on the autism spectrum enrich our world and can be very intelligent. But their different neurology can cause communication difficulties, especially in emergencies. This presentation will identify basic details about autism including what it is and is not and some of the symptoms. You will also have a presentation by Matt Ward, a                      young autistic man who will share his personal experiences. Matt will describe his life including his history, sensory issues, coping strategies, challenges and triumphs. Finally, Nancy will use stories drawn from Matt’s experiences and her years of friendship with other adults on the autism spectrum to aid understanding and illustrate possible problems first responders may encounter with those on the autism spectrum. Communication and calming strategies will be discussed. Attendees will receive a handout with summary information relevant to first responders and recommended resources.
